Michael Rondot's powerful painting portrayal of an AV-8B Harrier II is a tribute to this revolutionary aircraft and the famous Marine Attack Squadron 211 (VMA-211) "Wake Island Avengers". The superb AV-8B Harrier II was an immediate success with Marine Corps attack squadron pilots when it was introduced in the mid 1980s. Developed in the US from the earlier AV-8A close-support fighter, it carried more fuel, had a bigger wing and elevated cockpit, better avionics and better flying characteristics. In 1991, AV-8B Harriers were the first U.S. Marine Corps tactical aircraft to arrive in theatre for Operation Desert Storm. During the 42 days of combat, 86 Harrier IIs flew 3,380 combat sorties and delivered more than 6 million pounds of ordnance. Since then, it has served with distinction in every US major conflict and theatre of operations, where its performance and ability to use forward operating bases continues to reinforce the need for a V/STOL aircraft in the USMC arsenal. For something really special, a remarque pencil drawing of a Harrier and any squadron badges can be added to your print.
